From Al Bucher, Corporate VP of Operations on Asheville, NC service:
I understand that there are a lot of questions concerning our Asheville Terminal and what the current status is as well as what are the next steps.
For the sake of brevity, I’ll bullet point the following:
CURRENT TERMINAL STATUS:
The terminal is inoperable, and the insurance adjusters and our real estate team, as well as the equipment and freight claims adjusters are actively working through the extent of loss in each of those areas. We’re hopeful that this process will conclude over the next week or so. It is highly unlikely that we will return to our terminal and be able to operate out of that facility again.
We’re delivering into Asheville as much as possible but are servicing some of the areas from our Charlotte terminal. Deliveries right now are concentrating on relief efforts and targeting HD and Lowes as well as other business that is helping to either rebuild or relief efforts. Realize that Charlotte is not going all the way into Ashville but delivering areas that can be reached within a reasonable stem time. This is ongoing and fluid at the present time.
Our Greenville terminal is backed up and overloaded with shipments to deliver and at the present time is unable to add resources to help take delivery areas away from the Asheville terminal coverage area.
MOVING FORWARD:
We’re working to set up an operation at a different location and lease doors from another carrier in the city of Asheville. We’re in the process of setting up temporary technology capabilities to get this location into a state where we can begin to have a terminal operation stood up. We hope to have a small operation stood up in Asheville no later than the middle of next week. The size of the operation at the start will not be the same size or have the same coverage area that had been covered by the terminal in the past. As we get settled in our new location, we will be adding zip codes to this operation and growing it as we move forward. A lot will depend upon our people in Asheville and what their ability to return to work will be. As soon as we understand how much volume the limited terminal space that we will have can hold we will be making these shifts.
We’re working as hard as possible to split off the Asheville service areas that they will not be able to cover over to other terminals: Hickory and Greenville and as far as Chattanooga will be helping to take care of many of the Asheville zip codes and we’ll come to the final determination of how much the new Asheville operation will be able to handle.
We’re looking to replace all of the terminal equipment that is needed to stand up this terminal operation. Trucks, trailers, straight trucks, lift gates, pallet jacks, forklifts, carts, bars, straps, and EVERYTHING else that is needed to have a viable operation running to provide our service to our customers.
